In what amounts to a one-week break from his four-month vacation, Jim Furyk surprised himself Thursday with a 4-under 68 that gave him a two-shot lead after the first round of the Chevron World Challenge, according to the Associated Press. Furyk has not played a competitive round since winning the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda on Oct. 15.

Is Stevie Williams that good? Or is Tiger Woods' softening with age? In any regard, news that Williams has retained the most desirable caddie job in the world after making headlines with a crude critique of Phil Mickelson would indicate that the Woods-Williams partnership is more than just business. Woods has dismissed one caddie for lesser crimes.
