June 24 - St. Joseph, MO - The Missouri Amateur Championship is the state's premier amateur golf competition. Players from as south as Joplin, MO to as East as St. Louis, to as far west as Kansas convened this week at St. Joseph Country Club to compete for the 2009 Missouri Amateur Championship.
Defending Champion, Justin Bardgett is in field. Fresh off a solid performance at the Sunnehanna is back for another run at glory. After stroke play qualifying rounds of 72-73, Bardgett is poised for a spot in the 64 player match play field to tee it up Thursday morning.
The story through two rounds is the stellar play of University of Missouri Sophomore, Jace Long. Long's low round during a heralded high school career was 64. He matched that total on Wednesday in the second round of the Missouri Amateur Championship. Long's 7-under par round was the lowest of the tournament, bettering Jared King's first round 66 by two shots.
St. Joseph native's, Brad Hurski and Brian Haskell surprised nobody by advancing to the field of 64. Nurski played alongside Jared King for the two days of stroke play qualifying, posting scores of 71-67. Haskell notched a first round 69 combined with a second round 73, enough to earn a low seed for Thursday's match play portion of the competition.
