64 year old, Gerald Siemons earns top seed at St. Louis District Golf Association Championship

St. Louis, MO - July 16 - Amateur golf is said to be a young man's game. The summer is long, the weather is scorching hot and the competition fierce. The greens are firm and fast, most tournaments require the players to walk and the golf courses continue to get longer and longer. But yet, it's a 64 year old atop the leaderboard at the 2010 St. Louis District Golf Association Championship.
The host venue of the 91st playing of the St. Louis District Men's Championship may have something to do with the leaderboard and specifically who's on top. Westwood CC is known for being a very tight and demanding shot makers golf course, requiring precise play from the tee and equally important distance control with approach shots to the green. While Siemons, the oldest player in Missouri Amateur golf history to qualify for match play in the Missouri Amateur Championship, may not fit the description of today's elite amateur golfer, he definitely fits the criteria required by Westwood Hills CC.
Siemons posted a first round 74 and second round 67 to earn medalist honors and the #1 seed as the tournament shifts to match play for the weekend. The top 16 players will tee it up beginning Saturday morning with four matches required from the eventual champion to be crowned on Sunday evening. Siemons will face Van Pierce of CC of St. Albans on Saturday morning.
Others advancing to Match Play include Chris Brant, winner of the East Side Amateur Championship earlier this summer. The #2 seed Brant will see Tim Cochran of UMSL on the first tee tomorrow morning. The winner of the Brant / Cochran match will get the winner of the Alex Cusamano vs. Alex Knoll match on Saturday afternoon.
Two WingHaven Country Club members advanced to the match play portion of the competition. The aforementioned }Cusamano and WingHaven Club Champion, Scott McClellan who will play Ryan McPhillips.
Darren Lundgren posted rounds of 72 and 73 to earn the 6 seed and will play Norwood Hills Country Club's, John Anderson. The winner of this match will play either Justin Bryant or Kevin McLaughlin in the second round.
While it's been Scott Langley grabbing most of the headlines the past several weeks, it's Scott's younger brother Nick who will be front and center at Westwood CC this weekend. Nick earned the 5th seed by virtue of posting 71-74 and will meet Jack Eisenbeis. The winner of this match will meet David Johnson or Brian Hall on Saturday afternoon.
It's going to be one of the hottest weekends of the year with one of the toughest golf courses in the metro area awaiting the players as they look to win one of the oldest amateur golf championships in St. Louis.
