May 23rd - It was a short but sweet show this week on The Back Nine.  The show which normally airs 8am - 10am on 101.1 ESPN skipped directly to the our "back nine" with a one hour show, to accommodate the baseball pregame show at 11am.  But it was a jam packed hour of golf talk nonetheless.

Big Ten Coach of the Year, Mike Small previewed the upcoming NCAA Championship which begins this week in Toledo, Ohio.  The University of Illinois joins 29 other teams in pursuit of the 2009 National Championship.  Illinois enters the championship as the 12th seed, paired with Arkansas and S. Carolina for the first two days of stroke play competition.  Teams will be repaired after 36 holes for the final 18 holes of stroke play competition.  The low 8 teams will advance to Match Play which begins on Friday.  Match Play returns to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1964 and as those in the golf world know, anything can happen in Match Play.  While the eventual champion may not be "the best" team on paper, it does create for exciting head to head competition with many of the countries top amateur golfers on center stage.

The Bogeyman, Dan O'Neill joined the discussion with the introduction of the "On The Clock" segment.  The Bogeyman offered his perspective on Padraig Harrington's decision to rebuild his golf swing, Shane Lowry turning professional, the Mickelson's newest challenge and the Gateway PGA Match Play Championship.

Kelly Tilghman, the first female play by play commentator to cover the PGA Tour, made her first appearance on The Back Nine.  Kelly commennted on Amy Mickelson's situation and the overwhelming support being offered by others in the golf world to the Mickelson family.  Operation Links, a special project in which Kelly Tilghman participated in, debuts on Monday Night at 8pm EST on The Golf Channel.  Kelly shared her personal experiences in Iraq during her USO Tour last Thanksgiving.
