Control The Roll

Part of developing a good short-game is mastering technique, but just as important is learning the secrets of strategy and course management. Consider this article an introduction to short-game savvy.

AS A GENERAL RULE for short shots, the more the ball rolls on the green, the easier it is to control. Trying to fly the ball to the hole means having to guage the flight perfectly. That's alot of pressure to place on yourself. Shots that land just on the green and then roll to the hole require less precision, and shorter swings. The lower the loft of your chipping club, the more the shot rolls like a putt. Use a three club system....using the wedge for short chips, the 9 iron for medium length chips, and a 7 iron for longer chip shots.

HIT DOWN TO GO UP

A common mistake among high handicappers is trying to lift the ball in the air on chips and pitches. Since the ball is on the ground, you cannot make solid contact if the club is moving upward at impact. The club's loft is there to propel the ball into the air. Use it. To do this, play the ball back in your stance, angle your hands slightly ahead, and put most of your weight over your front foot. Then swing back and through normally. The adjusted set-up will produce the contact you need.
