September 14 - WingHaven Country Club - The top amateur golfers, over the age of 25, have convened at WingHaven Country Club in O'Fallon, MO to compete for the title of 2011 Missouri Mid-Amateur Champion. Last year's champion, Harry Roberts is in the field, as well as other notable past Missouri Golf Association Champions such as Brad Nurski, Brian Haskell, Don Bliss, Dustin Ashby and David Lucks. Top area amateurs like Tom Barry, Patrick Riordan, Ted Moloney, David Johnson, Scott Edwards and Jack Eisenbeis are also in the field.
Players were forced to embrace difficult conditions on Wednesday with a constant rain making the Nicklaus Design golf course play increasingly difficult as the day developed. It was the constant rain that eventually caused Tournament Officials to postpone Round 1 and require players to resume play on Thursday at 7:30am.
Only five players finished their first round with only Mark Gardiner and Joe Timpone breaking 80. Conditions were so difficult on Wednesday the normal par of 72 was estimated to be 76 on this day.
The most likely beneficiaries of play being stopped on Wednesday are the players with later tee times in Round 1. This group includes many of the area's top amateurs and favorites this week such as Brian Haskell, Brad Nurski who teed off at 11:36am in the final pairing. Ted Moloney, Tom Barry, Chad Hull and Mark Strother are also near the end of the draw and will most likely play the majority of the tournament in much better conditions as compared to the players who played the majority, or all, of their first round in the constant downpour on Wednesday.
