On a day fit better for duck hunting, many of the area's top amateur golfers were on the golf course attempting to earn their way into the 2012 Missouri Amateur Championship being contested in a few weeks at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau.
Garrett Snead led the way posting a 2-under par, 69 to earn medalist honors. Sneed spread 5 birdies against 3 bogeys to finish as the only player in the field to break par on the wet and challenging Country Club of The Legends layout. If it weren't for a double bogey on the par 4, 17th hole, Phil Caravia would have found red numbers as well, but had to settle for a 1-over, 72. Most importantly, Caravia stamped his ticket to Dalhousie.
Other notables who will make their way to Cape Girardeau in a few weeks include Tom Barry (74), Kevin Bell (75), Sam Migdal (75), Brian Craig (75), Bob Meeh (75), Jeff Johnson (75), Ryan Marks (75), Mike Wooten (75), Ben Cantrell (75), Ted Moloney (76), Kyle Weldon (77), Andy Hogenmiller (77), Buddy Allen (77) and Dr. Tobin Lingafelter of The Back Nine Radio Show (74).
The conditions and difficult golf course got the best of many players who unfortunately won't be playing in the 2012 Missouri Amateur Championship, including The Back Nine's Dustin Ashby, Brad Welch, Terry Yake, Anthony Brown, Gerald Siemons, Darrell Huisinga, Karl Albrecht, Joe Christian, Justin Bliss and Adam Welch.Players who didn't qualify do have one last chance, should they choose to participate. The Missouri Golf Association began offering a "Last Chance Qualifying" to be held after all primary qualifying tournaments are completed at Oak Meadow GC in Rolla, MO on June 11.
