June 14, Belk Park GC - Only days removed from U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying where he came up short of qualifying for the United States Open, Skip Berkmeyer was back doing what he does best - winning. Two years ago, Berkmeyer fired a course record, 10 under par 62, to win the East Side Amateur. This year, a pair was good enough to take down the pot.
Back to back 67's gave Berkmeyer a four shot margin over Paul Neeman and a five shot margin over University of Iowa college player, Chris Brant. Dustin Ashby, Darren Lundgren and Andrew Pranger finished 6 shots back at 4 under par for the tournament. David Johnson, Denny Reagan and Buddy Allen were 8 back at 2 under par.
Berkmeyer is in action on the East Side of the river again this week at the United States Amateur Public Links Qualifying at Clinton Hill Golf Course. Two players from the sixty one player field will advance to the USGA Public Links National Championship.
For those not playing in the USGA Public Links Qualifying, the St. Louis District Men's Championship awaits at the Country Club of the Legends. Berkmeyer is actually the defending champion of this event but will forgo his defense in favor of attempting to qualify for the Public Links Championship.
Scott Thomas, who finished 15th in the regular division, finished 1st among the Senior's in the field at 145. The reigning Metropolitan Amateur Senior Player of the Year is well on his way to defending his position as the area's top player over 50. Bob Meeh finished second in the Senior division at 146.
