When Jason Heyward crushed a 2-0 pitch in his first Major League at-bat over
the right field wall at Turner Field, fans on both coasts cheered in excitement.
The 476-blast ushered in a new era for Braves baseball in Atlanta, but it also
gave Callaway Golf officials in San Diego the perfect poster boy for their new
promotion.
Throughout the entire MLB season, Callaway will send a full set of
its new Diablo Edge golf clubs to any slugger who sends a home run farther than
470 feet. “We are happy to send him the first set,” said Callaway Golf Dir of
Communication Tim Buckman. “We're simply looking to get our new Diablo Edge
clubs into the hands of athletes who would appreciate and make the most of the
distance benefits they deliver.” The promotion, not affiliated with MLB or the
MLBPA, is part of Callaway’s effort to “grow the game and attract more athletic
and aggressive athletes to golf,” said Buckman.
The company, which plans to send
the clubs to Heyward later this week, currently has no plans to activate around
this initiative, hoping instead to raise awareness through publicity efforts and
social media. “Callaway has always looked to bring more people to the sport,”
Buckman said, “and this is another step in that direction.”
