After seemingly endless delays, and those of all
varieties, the U.S. Amateur is working towards getting back on schedule.
Today, the first round of matches in match play will finish up, with
the round of 32 going out starting at 11:00 am. Many big names have
already advanced to the round of 32, but number one seed and stroke play
medalist Gregor Main was defeated in the round of 64 by Rhode Island
native Bobby Leupold.
Two big names are now set to meet in the
round of 32 today. Russell Henley, a winner on the Nationwide Tour this
year already, is set to take on world number one amateur Patrick
Cantlay. They will tee off at 12:00 pm today, and the match is sure to
provide some fireworks.
Patrick Cantlay is the world's number one ranked Amateur. He is set to face off against Russell Henley at noon today.
Another big match on the schedule in the round of 32 is Andrew Putnam vs. Kelly Kraft. Both players have been labeled as potential Walker Cup Team Members. A win in this match may determine one of the three final spots on Captain Jim Holtgrieve's Walker Cup squad.
Keeping an eye on the Walker Cup, St. Louis native, Scott Langley has made his statement so far at Erin Hills. After a disappointing 2011 season, Langley entered the U.S. Amateur knowing he needed to make a deep run to secure a spot on Holtgrieve's team. Langley will face Mitch Sutton of Canada at 11:30am CST in the round of 32. Key for Langley this week was firing a tournament low, 63, in his second round of stroke play qualifying. A win here and Langley is a lock in our opinion for the Walker Cup.
