The LPGA Tour seemed to be moving in the right direction about 3 years ago. Young guns like Morgan Pressel and Paula Creamer were blossoming, Michelle Wie was still expected to be great and the beautiful Natalie Gulbis had just won her first tour event, extracating the 'Anna Kourikova' moniker that had been following her. All the stars seemed to be aligning for a boom in the womens game. At least I thought I would be watching more womens golf over that period.
All of a sudden, Annika Sorenstam decided to retire and the heir apparent, Lorena Ochoa, was dominating the game with very little personality or charisma. The Americans just can't seem to win consistently enough despite talented players like Creamer, Kerr, Lincicome and Lindsey Wright. Not to mention the Korean and other Asian players seem to come out of nowhere consistently to win tournaments.
Then Commissioner Bivens made comments about forcing players to learn English, Tweeting (Twittering) during competition and loses several long time LPGA Tournament Sponsors. Not much else could be going wrong for the LPGA Tour. Or could it? Now Commissioner Bivens has been forced out among all of the controversy, most of all the loss of sponsorship, and again an American fails to close the deal in the US Open. Who knows where the tour will end up over the 2nd half of the seasonm but it is not looking good for the game despite the bright light that seemed to shining just a few years ago.
