WEST FRANKFORT - With no wily veteran to thwart him this time around, Jake Erickson did what he has been doing best this summer - win.

After shooting a dominating 5-under 66 on Saturday, the Southern Illinois University sophomore added to his total with a 2-under 69 on Sunday at Franklin County Country Club to win the 87th annual SIGA Championship by five strokes. It's the third straight tour victory for Erickson, who lost out to SIGA Hall of Famer Tom Portner for the 2010 title.

"I tried to go as low as I could that first day because I knew every stroke was going to count," said Erickson. "When you build a four-shot lead like I did, you feel pretty comfortable out there."

In only his second year on the SIGA tour, the 20-year-old Springfield native has won his first Pursie Pipes Trophy, something his SIU coach, Leroy Newton, won three times (1982, 1983, 1985). The SIGA Championship is the longest-running amateur golf tournament in Illinois.

"You see some of the names on (the trophy)," Erickson said. "Zach Barlow, Portner, Brian Norman, Leroy Newton. It's an honor to have my name on there with those guys."

Erickson wasn't the only one in the tournament's leaders group for the second straight year, as Matt Pool earned a spot in the final foursome with an even 71 on Saturday. But it was another year of missed opportunities for Pool, who finished the 2010 tournament in third place and finished third once again when veteran Jerry Hale carded a 69 on Sunday to snag second place with a two-day score of 140.

"I hit the ball alright, I made five birdies," said Pool, who will miss next weekend's Benton Gold Cup as he and his wife, Nicole, are expecting their first child. "When you make five birdies on a course like this, you should be able to shoot something in the middle 60s."

Pool was 2-over after five holes, but eventually fought back to go 1-under with a birdie on No. 17. A bogey on No. 18 gave him a 71 for the second straight day.

"I was pressing a little too much trying to catch Jake and I think that kind of hurt me a little bit," Pool said. "He had such a big lead."

Another golfer who tried and failed to bite into Erickson's lead was recent Maryville University graduate Sam Carlson, who entered Sunday's round in second place with a 70. Carlson struggled in having to hit out of the woods on three of the first five holes and entered the turn with a 1-over 37. The back nine was even tougher, dropping him to a 4-over 75 for the round and a tie for sixth place.

In the women's championship, Austin Peay alumna Chelsea Harris won her third SIGA title in the last four years with a five-stroke victory over Jenny Bernhardt. After carding a 65 on Saturday, the Massac County High School graduate recorded a 74 on Sunday to give her a two-day total of 139.

"My mindset was basically to hit fairways and greens," said Harris, who is losing her amateur status next summer and will compete in the Tennessee Women's Open at Stonehenge Golf Club starting Thursday. "I didn't hit very many fairways (Saturday), but I did manage to hit quite a few greens."

Jenny Bernhardt finished second with a 144, four strokes ahead of Lindsay Kellerman. The SIGA next heads to birdie-friendly Benton Country Club for the Gold Cup tournament starting Saturday. Jeff Miller is the defending champion, but his availability for the competition is in question after suffering a wrist injury during Saturday's opening round that forced him to withdraw from the tournament.

WEST FRANKFORT - Jake Erickson is getting another chance at the SIGA championship after carding a 5-under 66 Saturday at Franklin County Country Club.

With a four-stroke lead over recent Maryville University graduate Sam Carlson, the Southern Illinois University sophomore in his second year on the SIGA tour will compete for the Pursie Pipes Trophy for the second straight year. Erickson lost out to defending champion Tom Portner last year and entered the weekend just 16.7 points behind the SIGA Hall of Famer in the 2011 Player of the Year point standings with 925.8 points.

"I feel like I've gotten a little more experience," Erickson said. "Last year, was my first year in the SIGA and I knew what to expect (Saturday)."

The 20-year-old Springfield native recorded six birdies, an eagle and three bogeys in his round. The FCCC course has five par 5s - Erickson birdied four of them and eagled the other.

"Generally, the best part of my game is driving the ball," Erickson said. "If I'm hitting the ball in the fairway, it kinda helps and I felt that I needed to take advantage of the par 5s."

It was a rough day for the defending champion, who enters today's finale in a tie for 11th place with a 3-over 74. Portner, who became just the second golfer in the last 20 years to win the tournament three times with his 2010 victory, carded a rare double-bogey on No. 7 and finished the front nine with no birdies and a 3-over 39.

"I think I've got a chance (at the championship), but it's going to be tough," Portner said, who shot an even 35 on the back nine. "Making two birdies on the last three holes at least kept my mind into it heading into (today)."

Portner started to right the ship with a birdie on No. 10, but back-to-back bogeys on No. 11 and 12 erased his momentum and another bogey on 14 sent him to 5-over for the round. However, back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to end the day put the 47-year-old in a better frame of mind.

"Historically, if I have a bad first round I usually do very well in the second round," Portner said. "I'm hoping for much of the same again."

Portner also had plenty of competition in his group with both Barry Craig and Matt Pool playing alongside. Craig is currently third on the points list with 772, while Pool was in the final leaders group in last year's tournament and will be there again today.

He finished Saturday's round with an even 71 in a four-way tie for third place. It's a familiar spot for Pool, who finished tied for third place in 2010 with a 143 score, but learned some important lessons from his brush with the championship.

"It wasn't the nerves, I just didn't feel that I belonged," said Pool, who first started playing golf in 2004. "I didn't think I was mentally ready to take that next step and play well on Sunday."

In the women's championship, Chelsea Harris has a nine-stroke lead over Lindsay Kellerman after carding a 6-under 65. Jenny Bernhardt is in third place with a 75. Chuck Thompson and Roger Tippy are tied for the lead in the men's net with a 69, while Alan Diedrick holds a one-stroke lead over Stan Curtis and Joe Davidson in the senior men division with an even 71

Portner, Harris take home SIGA Championship titles for 2010

MOUNT VERNON - Tom Portner is a champion - again.

With birdies on No.'s 17 and 18 Sunday at Green Hills Golf Club, Portner finished with a 3-under-par 68 for the round and an 8-under-par 134 for the tournament as he captured his third SIGA Championship title and first since 2006.

"I was glad I was able to do it one more time," said Portner, who became just the second player in the last 20 years to win the Pursie Pipes Trophy three times. "I really, really fought the first six, seven, eight holes."

Portner entered the final round with a three-stroke lead over Southern Illinois University sophomore Jake Erickson and Matt Pool, who were tied for second with a 69.

And after a two-hour rain delay, it was Erickson who came out of the gate the strongest in erasing Portner's lead in the first two holes. The SIGA Hall of Famer bogeyed No. 1, while the 19-year-old Erickson birdied No.'s 1 and 2 to pull him into a tie for the lead.

"I didn't expect to come out and play as bad as I did early, but I knew somebody was going to make a run at me," Portner said. "That didn't bother me. It's an 18-hole golf tournament and I never worry about the first few."

Portner briefly regained the lead when Erickson bogeyed No. 4, but a long drive off the tee on No. 6 set up a birdie for the Springfield native that brought the two even once again.

And then came No. 9 and the turning point of the round.

"I hit a horrible shot (on No. 9) and short-sided myself," Erickson said. "And (Portner) birdies and then I'm back down two (strokes)."

Erickson bogeyed 9, while Portner sank a 22-foot putt to give him an even score of 35 entering the turn. He increased the advantage back to three strokes with a birdie on 10 before carding six straight pars heading to 17.

"I really needed to make that putt (on No. 9)," Portner said. "If nothing else, than for me to get some momentum going."

With the 46-year-old former champion not showing any signs of wavering, Erickson's chances of chasing him back down gradually faded. He finished in second place with a 138, but also came away with lessons learned after his battle with Portner.

"I knew he wasn't going to give me anything," Erickson said. "He out-hit my wedges all day. I would be 30 yards out and he would put (the ball) 10 yards closer every time."

In the meantime, Pool birdied 14 to put him at 1-over for the round and five strokes back of the lead - but bogeys on 16 and 18 gave him a 74 finish and a tie for third place with a 143.

"I kind of scraped it around and got the most out of it," Pool said on his round. "It could have been better if I had made a couple more putts, but it is what it is."

The toughest battle of the day came in the Men's Net division, where Chris Ashby finally fought off Ryne Wade in a four-hole playoff that was eventually decided on No. 7. Ashby and Wade each finished the tournament with a 135.

In the Women's Gross, 2008 champion Chelsea Harris regained the SIGA title with a 14-stroke victory over Roberta Sentel. The Austin Peay junior and Metropolis native carded a 68 Sunday to finish the tournament with a 135.

"My chipping was pretty good," Harris said. "I was getting up and down quite a bit. I was pulling the ball quite a bit (Sunday) and I don't normally hit a pull."
