Haskell recaptures title as Missouri
Mid Amateur Champion
Day 2, Wednesday September 16, 2009

By Ceanne Kressig

Haskell recaptures title as 2009 Missouri Mid Amateur Champion but not without having some ups and downs in the second round.  Brian Haskell of St. Joseph had a two stroke lead over the field at Glen Echo Country Club.  He had a solid front nine but the back nine did not come as easy.  On the front side he made two birdies to extend his lead.  Then on hole 8 he drained a ten footer for eagle, making it look like he would be the clear winner.  Fellow competitor, Andrew Pranger of St. Louis was having a steady round making six pars, two birdies, one bogie.  After 27 holes Haskell was 10 under and Pranger 5 under.

As Haskell played the back nine he was not putting as well and made two bogies then immediately a double bogie.   Haskell’s lead then fell to two shots over Pranger.  As they approached 18, Haskell was only one stroke ahead of Pranger.  Haskell put his approach shot in the bunker, while Pranger was on the green in two shots.  Pranger had to only two putt to force Haskell to get up and down out of the bunker.  But Haskell hit an amazing bunker shot and left about 6 feet to the pin.  Pranger putts his and leaves it short then misses the next, finishing the hole with a disappointing bogie.  Now all Haskell had to do was two putt his way to a consecutive victory, and he did just that.  Haskell finished at 3 under for the tournament, both Kennedy and Pranger finished 2 under at the Mid Amateur Championship.

With Pranger making bogie on his last hole it put him in a tie for runner up with Brian Kennedy of Chesterfield, MO.  In a scorecard playoff Kennedy won the runner up trophy.  Kennedy was one of the few people who shot under par the second day of the competition.  Only three people shot under par the second day.  The low round of the day went to Tom Barry of St. Louis with an outstanding 4 under par, leaving him in a tie for fifth place.  The other player that shot under par the second day was local, Brad Heath who carded a 70, one under par.

Players were faced with a little more wind at Glen Echo Country Club on day 2.  They also saw harder pin placements on their quick greens, showing why only three scores were shot under par.

Congratulations to Brian Haskell of St Joseph, Two Time Missouri Mid-Amateur Champion and to all other participants!
