Poplar Bluff, MO - Darren Lundgren is two for two in 2009 after coming from five shots back to win the 2009 Ozark Invitational at Westwood Hills Country Club. Lundgren, along with partner Buddy Allen, won the Jack Geiss 2-man championship at Lockhaven Country Club earlier this month.
Lundgren trailed first round leader, Brian Kennedy, by five shots heading into Sunday's final round. While the temperatures were warm, the wind played havoc with players over the two days of competition. Gusts of up to 35 mph made attacking the 6,300 yard layout at Westwood Hills Country Club challenging.
Ben Godwin, four time champion of the Ozark Invitational, also made a run on day two. After a disappointing first round 77, Godwin posted a 3 under par 68 to finish T6. Jeff Johnson of St. Louis followed his first round 69 with a second round 76. First round leader, Kennedy, struggled to a 78 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 9th. The father-son combination of Wayne and Nathan Fredrick tied for 3rd at 143. Brian Haskell of St. Joseph's, MO finished two shots back of Lundgren at 142.
Scott Thomas carried the momentum gained from last season when he was the Missouri Golf Association Senior Player of the Year, making up a four shot deficit to win the Senior Division. Thomas fired 75-71-146 in catching first round leader Steve Groom of Raytown, MO who posted 71-78-149. Former UMSL golfer, Andy Smith of Gladstone, MO finished in 3rd place with scores of 77-74-151.
