St. Louis District - Match Play Rnd 1
St. Louis, MO - The field of sixteen has been wittled to four in the St. Louis District Men's Championship taking place at Norwood Hills Country Club. Saturday had its share of upsets and close matches as is expected in match play competition.
#1 seed, Skip Berkmeyer (pictured left) experienced both extremes on Saturday as he advanced to the final four where he will face Matt Hines in one semifinal match. Berkmeyer defeated Chris Brant 5&4 in the morning and then took 20 holes to defeat Andrew Pranger in the afternoon.
The aforementioned Matt Hines defeated Van Pierce 3&2 in his morning match and had an easier time in defeating Matt Kopsky, 5&4 in the afternoon. Kopsky earlier defeated defending champion, Dustin Ashby 4&2 in his morning match.
Justin Bardgett (pictured right), who captured the Missouri Amateur Chamnpionship last Sunday was upset in
round one, as Joe Timpone won 2up. Timpone was able to continue his solid play in the afternoon defeating Tom Barry, 2up. Barry advanced to the afternoon match after defeating the 2006 St. Louis District Champion, Darren Lundgren 2&1.
Ted Moloney, a semifinalist in 2007, was upended by Wake Forest Demon Deacon Justin Bryant, 2up. Bryant will play the cinderalla of the 2008 event, Joe Timpone as a result of his afternoon victory over
Kansas State Wildcat, Mitchell Gregson (pictured left).
The 18-hole final match will take place Sunday afternoon.
