Slope Rating is perhaps the single most misunderstood concept in the Handicap System. A Slope Rating is the USGA's mark that indicates the relative difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers compared to the Course Rating. Most people think the higher the Slope, the more difficult the course. However, you can't compare a golf course's difficulty from the Slope Rating alone.

Amateur golf in Kansas City, like other endeavors, grew because young people took up the game. For decades, one of the paths young people followed into amateur golf was the caddie program. Kansas City has a rich history in caddie programs....From the 1930's through the 1980's caddie programs at Kansas City golf courses flourished. Quite literally, the only avenue a young man had to pick up the game was a caddie's job if you were of modest means or involvement in golf through your parent's affiliation with a club. Not only was a caddie's position a pathway into golf, for many it was a pathway to college. Of course, no discussion of this subject is complete without reference to Charles "Chick" Evans, Jr. Chick Evans was an amateur golfer in the 1910's and 1920's, and in his time sometimes considered only second to the great Bobby Jones.....

This is the time of the year that most superintendents dread. We are starting to see the commercials for the Maters Tournament and that usually marks the beginning of the golf season here in the Midwest. We all enjoy watching the spectacle on TV. The beautiful azaleas in full bloom, that familiar theme music, and of course the awesome competition that the first major of the year produces really gets everyone's golfing juices flowing. It is time to brush off the dust and get out on the links!

Do you have a USGA Handicap Index? Any golfer that plays more than five times a year should have one, and let me tell you why. When you register to obtain a USGA certified handicap you have the ability to play a fair game, on any golf course using the USGA course rating system, regardless of your ability. With a KCGA handicap membership you have that added benefit of tracking your statistics, you will have access to member discounts and awards, and you will be updated on local golf news and have access to e-tools that will help you measure your game. Most importantly you will have eligibility to compete in competitive golf events.

As you get ready to shake the rust off your swing to start the new season, we should think about the proper way to set up the ball.
If you have ever gone to the range to watch the pros practice at a PGA TOUR event you'll see that they always have a "hitting station" set up. At the very least their caddy or swing coach is behind them to be sure they are set up square to their target.
