Augusta, GA - Thursday, April 5 - Round One is in the books at the season's first major championship and as expected we have a few surprises. I guess we shouldn't be surprised the top of the leader board is dominated by Europeans, led by Lee Westwood. Westwood is looking for that elusive first major championship win and flying a bit under the radar this week as most of the pre-tournament attention pointed in Rory and Tiger's direction. Westwood has never led after 18-holes of a major championship, until now.

On Tuesday night over an inch and half dropped on Augusta National and an equal amount is expected to fall today. The Tournament Committee at Augusta National has all the toys at their disposal to get the golf course back into tournament condition, most notably a Sub-Air system which controls moisture levels in the greens. That being said, more rain is expected and the timing of potential weather delays could play a major factor in this championship.

As Hunter Mahan was putting the finishing touches on his 2nd victory of the 2012 season in Houston, players were making their way to Augusta, GA for Masters week. For some, it will be a short stay at Augusta but a memorable one. Success in this tournament, on this sacred golf course, is usually reserved for those with experience. Yet experience alone won't be enough to withstand the variety of challenges Augusta National presents the best players in the world, especially when so many of the games top players are on top of their game. So bring a hot putter, a calm resolve and a lot of patience if you expect to be in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Golf is the greatest game. And I do not believe anyone with a brain could argue against it. No other sport is self policed, in no other sport is there a much time to get in your own head between actions. There are not multi-million dollar contracts...you eat what you kill. There is no trash talking, though a little gamesmanship is certainly in play from time to time.

College golf programs are gearing up for a big spring and championship season. Here are links to the area college golf teams. We're interested in following St. Louis natives during their college years, so if you know of a player competing in college, let us know.
