East Side Amateur features strongest field in event’s history

The fifth annual East Side Amateur, slated for June 14-15 at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River, Ill., will feature the strongest group of players in tournament history, including a wealth of collegiate standouts and veteran amateur champions.

The field will include 1981 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Jim Holtgrieve, 2008 Normandie Amateur champion Darren Lundgren;  2007 Normandie Amateur champion Buddy Allen; 2007 St. Louis District champion Dustin Ashby; 2008 MAGA Match Play runner-up Brian Kennedy; 2007 U.S. Open local qualifier Ted Moloney and 2008 U.S. Open local qualifier John Anderson. Other prominent amateurs in the field include Meadowbrook’s Scott Thomas, Fox Run’s Matt Hines and Patrick Riordan.

A number of top collegians just completing their spring seasons will be making their first appearance of the MAGA season. Heading the list is Duke’s Adam Long and Kansas State’s Mitch Gregson.

The youth movement also includes Wake Forest’s Justin Bryant (2007 U.S. Amateur qualifier); Missouri State’s Ryan Weinhaus; UMSL’s Matt Thomas and Matt Rau; and William Woods’ Luke Heyer; Michigan’s Ross Millman (2008 U.S. Open local qualifier); Lindenwood’s Jonathan Prange and Colorado’s Justin Bardgett (2007 Metropolitan Match Play runner-up).

Last year, Skip Berkmeyer and Gregson waged an impressive battle to the finish at Belk Park. Starting second round action four shots behind the lead, Berkmeyer fired a 10-under par 62 over the final 18 holes. Playing in the same group as Berkmeyer, Gregson posted a 7-under 65 to finish in a tie for second with Allen, three shots off Berkmeyer’s pace.

The event is part of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA) tournament schedule and will figure in determining the 2008 MAGA Player of the Year.
