August 15, O'Fallon, MO - If Northern Ireland is the new capital of the professional golf world with recent major championships won by Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke one might consider St. Joseph the new golfing capital of the state of Missouri for similar reasons.
The trio of Brian Haskell, Harry Roberts and Brad Nurski have dominated amateur golf in Missouri Golf Association events for the past several years. The domination continued at this weeks Missouri Mid-Amateur Championship contested at WingHaven Country Club where Brad Nurski posted a 4-under par 36 hole total to win by 3 shots over Bob Hanneken of Fenton, MO.
Nurski, like most of the players on top of the leaderboard, was fortunate to enjoy optimal playing conditions. Teeing off in one fo the last groups for Round 1 meant Nurski was only asked to deal with monsoon like conditions on Wednesday for a few holes. When players returned on Thursday morning at 7:30am to finish their first round and complete their second rounds, Nurski faced a much different golf course than the players who endured the inclement weather on Wednesday. But such is the case in tournament golf and Nurski took full advantage of the opportunity.
Nurski's second round featured a bogey free, 4 birdie performance taking advantage of his length with birdies on three of the courses par 5's. Runner-up, Bob Hanneken was tripped up early in his second round by the difficult par 3, 4th hole at WingHaven Country Club. Hanneken made a double bogey, 5 on the hole, however responded quickly with a birdie on the par 5, 5th hole. If not for two double bogeys in the final round, WingHaven Country Club Member Chad Hull may have been able to pull the Missouri Mid-Amateur trophy away from St. Joseph, MO. Doubles on the par 5, 2nd hole and par 4, 10th hole slowed down Hull who finished in third place at 2 over par for the championship.
Nurski capturing the 2011 Missouri Mid-Amateur title means a St. Joseph, MO native has now won the tournament for four consecutive years. Haskell won the title in 2008 and 2009 and Harry Roberts won at The National last year. Nurski has now captured multiple Missouri Golf Association Major Titles, adding to the Missouri Match Play title he won in 2010.
