At 26 years of age, Martin Kaymer has now reached the pinnacle of the golf kingdom. On Monday morning, Kaymer will wake up as the best player in the game. Now while he will have to wait until Monday morning for it to be "official", it's been Kaymer who has played like the best player in the world since his victory at last year's PGA Championship.
Unfortunately for Kaymer, it's taken this jump to the position as World #1 for him to get the respect he deserves. For the past several seasons, the golf world has been captivated by the young Rory McIlroy and it's been Kaymer who has been playing second class citizen. All the while, Kaymer just wins, wins and wins some more. McIllroy has potential and may someday be the player to replace Kaymer as the world's top player, but today McIllroy can only claim two wins as a professional, one on the European Tour and another on the PGA Tour. Kaymer, meanwhile, has nine European Tour wins, including last year's PGA Championship, his first major.
Kaymer becomes only the second German after Langer to hold the world No. 1 spot. Many in the game believe it's a forgone conclusion that he will surpass Langer's feats in due time.
