St. Louis, July 25 - On one of the hottest weekends of the year, many of the area's top amateur golfers teed it up in the 2010 St. Louis City Championship at the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course.
The adage, there are horses for courses, is never more obvious than when an event is held at the historic, Forest Park Golf Course. Whether its the annual Publinx in May or the City Championship in July it seems many of the same names are regularly competing for the title.
Such was the case again in 2010 as one of the most storied amateurs in St. Louis golf history, Don Bliss, captured the Senior Division with back to back 67's. Bliss edged the duo of David Lucks and Terry Tessary by three shots. Several years ago it was Tessary who posted a 62 in this event to win the Senior Division. Gerald Siemons finished in 4th place after back to back 70's.
The regular division also showcased a past champion in the final pairing. Patrick Riordan posted a 64 on Saturday to start the final round in a tie for first place with Joe Molitor. Kevin McLaughlin made out the final group after a first round 67, putting him 3 shots back to start the day. Tim Cochran, Steven Souchek started the final round 4 shots back with Tom Vogt and Chad Niezing 5 back to begin the final round.
Players like Niezing and Riordan have experienced their share of success at the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course. So while the competition was strong, one could reasonably assume one of these two players would be in the mix down the stretch on Sunday. Riordan posted a final round 72 and Niezing finished with a second consecutive 69. But the eventual champion was Kevin McLaughlin who posted a tournament low round of 66 for a two day total of 133 and the 2010 title of St. Louis City Champion.
